Bellringer #11: Totalitarianism

Totalitarianism can be found in its very name; it is a form of rule in which the government attempts to maintain ‘total’ control over society, including all aspects of the public and private lives of citizens

Here are some common characterstics:

  • Rule by a single leader or party
  • Government control of the economy
  • Use of schools to indoctrinate the youth
  • Use of censorship and propaganda in th emedia: newspapers, radio, films, and advertisements
  • Use of police spies and terror to enforce the will of the government
